A Day in the Life of Recruiting Strategist John Hosmer
Most of us are familiar with the term ‘recruiter’ in some capacity; maybe you encountered it at some point in your career, maybe someone from the military tried to recruit you in high school, or maybe you were a star athlete in college and had recruiters at your games. These are all different types of recruiting but the foundation remains the same: a person looking for top talent in a specific industry.
When it comes to what we do at Route Networking Group, our focus is finding exceptional talent for Idaho businesses. That means we are always searching for software developers, marketing directors, account executives, and more for our clients across a broad range of industries and businesses.
As we all adjust to WFH and virtual meetings, a lot of people may wonder what a normal day for a recruiter looks like. Well, wonder no more! Here is a brief snapshot of a “Day in the Life” of a Recruiting Strategist at Route Networking Group.
My day starts like most of yours would: with coffee. This is how everyday has started for me for years, but especially now that I’m working from home (along with my wife and our fur babies), I definitely need a boost to shift me from “home mode” to “work mode.” With all of the disruptions that COVID-19 has brought, many of us have tried to use this time to create new habits. I have started practicing mediation and mindfulness before work which has increased my ability to focus and eliminate distractions. There are a lot of different ways to practice this (I’m currently using an app called ‘Balance’) but if you’re struggling to focus or mitigate distractions, this could be a great thing to try.
Because we’re all at home and not sharing office space, our teams is doing 3 virtual meetings each week so that we are all kept current on the business needs as a whole and where each of us are with our accounts. We keep it fun by changing the themes and times (last Friday we had Happy Hour together with some Frosé from Western Collective!) and not making it all ‘business-chat’; it’s important to still have fun and laugh together (especially when #teams or #zoom freezes someone’s face in a funny pose)! Staying connected is VITAL and something I am proud to say our team is excelling at.
Each of us have different methods for sourcing our candidates, but at the core of what we do we are always driven by relationships. It’s easy to find someone who checks the boxes of a job description, but it’s not always as easy to find someone that will also match the culture – which is equally important. That’s where we really dig in with our candidates and shine for our clients. We reach out with personalized messages to each candidate, then spend time on the phone with them to better understand, not only their background and experience, but who they are as a person and what they want in a career and work-environment. This helps us facilitate win-win-win- scenarios: our client has an amazing new employee, our candidate has landed an incredible new job, and we got to participate in the process!
On a daily basis, that’s where most of my time is split: searching for and reaching out to candidates via LinkedIn, Indeed, or email and then having phone calls or video chats with them.
We are committed to taking a ‘quality over quantity’ approach which is why we invest so much time into sourcing candidates and getting to know them. Our clients trust us to bring them the very best!
Which brings me to another vital part of what we do: client and account management. I mentioned above that we are driven by relationships and that is especially true with our clients. Part of what we do every week is maintaining that client relationship and making sure that we are meeting their needs; whether that be sourcing candidates for a new role, reviewing their compensation policies, or revamping their interview / hiring process. We understand that hiring is a big deal and takes a lot of time and effort. Our goal is to make that process as smooth and enjoyable as possible for all parties; maintaining strong and healthy communication with our clients is how we make that a reality.
Another part of what we do is business development. While many industries and businesses have been disrupted or stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of other industries are struggling to keep up with never-before-seen demand.
Our recruiting services are ready for businesses that are in need of new staff but don’t have the internal capacity to keep up. As I mentioned above, we work in a wide range of industries so if you are struggling to find talent and fill roles right now – keep reading to find out how to contact us!
By this point you’re probably thinking, “This all sounds like rainbows and butterflies!” and for the most part – it is! But, we all know WFH presents a lot of challenges to navigate each day as well. While my wife and I don’t have any human children, we do have a very energetic dog (named Murphy) and two less energetic cats (named Albus and Luna). In addition, my wife is also working from home and we have a roommate finishing his degree from home. So it can start to feel crowded!
Luckily, we all love each other and have naturally sorted out boundaries and common courtesy for each other. This means going to different rooms when taking calls, cleaning up after ourselves (who knew a kitchen could get so dirty so fast?!?), and being patient with each other.
Understanding that ALL of our routines have been upended and being ok with doing things a little differently benefits all of us. Remembering to be kind in your communication and flexible when things change is vital to making sure we all come through this pandemic healthier and happier. Eventually, life will return to a new ‘normal’ and all of us at RNG will be working just as hard to serve our community and our clients.
