What To Do After a Bad Interview

You did it. You got the chance to interview for your dream job.

You prep, you dress to impress, you practice, and you go in there and…blow it.

You were twitchy, your brain was taking a morning off, and you had your foot in your mouth the entire time. Maybe you woke up sick, didn’t drink your coffee, or didn’t sleep well, whatever the reason, you blew it. Don’t beat yourself up too much, you still could have a chance. TheBalanceCareers.com broke down the steps to take after a bad interview.

They give you three steps to handle when your interview tanks.

Their first step they mention is to give yourself a minute. Take a quick break to reflect on the experience, but do not let it drag you down. Understand what went wrong, how to fix it, and carry on.

The next step is to find the lessons in your performance. Do you need to spend more time on behavioral questions, bring more passion, or wake up 30 minutes earlier? How can you make sure you bring your A game to the next interview?

The final step is to ask for a second chance. Not all recruiters and companies have the time or money to throw you a bone, but some do.  Send a thank you and mention what happened. TheBalanceCareers.com included a sample email asking for a do-over, read it here.

What really matters after a bad interview is that you don’t let it get in your head. Take time to reflect on the experience, understand what you need to change, and then learn and move on. Check out our interview series to help you prep for the next one!
