How To Start Networking
We have all heard the saying “it’s about who you know” and this is true. 70-80% of job placements come from networking. When you’re just starting out in a new city or a new industry this can sound like a daunting task, but never fear, we have the tips and tricks to help you get started on building your network.
The first step is to put yourself out there!
Do a quick search to find local events, clubs, or organizations that are hosting networking events near you. After you find a few, mark your calendar and SHOW UP! Remember to dress appropriately (read here) and go get em’! If this is too big of a first step for you, start small and make a few connections through LinkedIn or other networking platforms.
Once you’ve made it to an event remember to smile, be genuine, listen, be yourself, and ask questions. Treat it almost like a blind date, trying to learn as much as you can while doing your best to make a connection. Set a goal to make a new friend or talk to a set amount of people. Collect business cards and hand yours out as well.
After you’ve made a few connections don’t forget to follow up!
Reach out to them and make sure to link up on social media platforms like LinkedIn. Spend time to understand how your new network connects and how you can play a role in it. Don’t accidentally ghost anyone by not following through.
Once crucial key to networking is to believe in it! This begins with understanding what you are bringing to the table. Know your value, strengths, and weaknesses and how to apply them within your network setting.
Think of your network as a plant. It won’t grow overnight, it can’t grow without being watered, and won’t survive unless you continue to care for it.
